2018 Travel Plans: Budapest, Hungary

A couple of weeks ago I asked you guys to help me decide which city I should visit in Europe. I got some great feedback and want to thank those of you that reached out to me with your suggestions. After much deliberation Elizabeth and I decided that we’re going to visit Budapest, Hungary this fall! Budapest was towards the top of our list initially and it just happened to fit perfectly into our schedule and our price range.

Even though we’re going to spend the majority of our time in Budapest, this trip is actually part of a larger itinerary. Elizabeth and I will start our trip with a quick pit stop in Los Angeles, then we’ll fly to Budapest for three days, and then end our trip with a stop in Doha before flying home in Qatar’s brand new Qsuites. All together, our journey will span over 17,600 miles across three different continents.

I booked our flights for this trip using a combination of cash and award tickets to minimize our out of pocket expense. We ended up spending $755 per person for our flights from Omaha (OMA) to Los Angeles (LAX), Los Angeles (LAX) to Budapest (BUD), and Chicago (ORD) to Omaha (OMA). Then we redeemed 90,000 AAdvantage miles and $76 per person for an award ticket from Budapest (BUD) to Doha (DOH) and Doha (DOH) to Chicago (ORD).

Throughout our trip we’ll spend a total of six nights in hotels. I used 160,000 Hilton Honors points to book a four-night stay at the Hilton Budapest City. Paid rates at this property were going for over $212 USD a night so that saved me over $848!

For our two-night stay in Doha, I used my annual free night certificate from the Hyatt Credit Card and $170 to book a room at the Grand Hyatt Doha.

All-In-All

I’m really excited to visit Budapest for the first time and spend a few days exploring what looks like an awesome city. To top it all off, I get a chance to review some great hotels and the world’s best business class product along the way. Only time will tell if it’s my best trip yet…
