How I'm Going to Use My Expiring United Miles

Last year I booked a round-trip ticket to Seattle, Washington on United and was awarded 1,295 miles for the flight. I typically don't fly United, or any Star Alliance partners for that matter, so my measly balance has been sitting stagnant for about a year.

Last week I received a letter from United MileagePlus informing me that my miles are going to expire on November 30, 2018. My initial reaction was to just toss the letter and let my 1,295 miles fall by the wayside.

As I continued to read, it explained how to use your leftover miles for magazine subscriptions. At this point I had nothing to lose so I flipped over the letter to see what they had to offer.

Well it turns out they've actually got some really good redemption options. For you sports fans out there you can literally get 39 issues of Sports Illustrated for only 100 miles! Even 12 issues of Travel + Leisure is only 800 miles.

Now I was curious what those magazine subscriptions would normally cost so I decided to look it up. For 39 issues of Sports Illustrated it would cost $20. In this particular case you'd be redeeming 100 miles for 20 cents/mile. Not too shabby.

12 Issues of Travel + Leisure normally costs $12.00. If you redeemed 800 miles you would get the subscription for 1.5 cents/mile. Not quite as good as Sports Illustrated, but it's better than nothing.

Even though these aren't earth-shattering redemptions, I still think they could be a great use of leftover miles. I'm excited to get my order placed and start getting my new magazines!

If you've got a small amount of United miles going to waste you may want to look at their Mags for Miles program. They've got a great magazine selection and most of the time you'll get a great redemption value for your leftover miles.

Am I crazy or has anyone else ever used miles for magazines?!
