I'm Headed to a Land Down Unda!

Ladies and gentleman, children of all ages, what you're about to read isn't for the faint of heart...

After months of strategizing I can finally say my trip to Australia is fully booked. My trip will be 10 days long starting December 3rd and ending December 12th. Elizabeth and I are going to spend four days in the Los Angeles, and four days in Sydney once we cross the Pacific. Our flight itinerary looks like this: OMA-MSP-LAX-SYD-SFO-PHX-OMA

We're going to cover a grand total of 18,410 miles, 6 cities, and 2 continents. It'll be quite the adventure.

Now it's time to crunch the numbers! How much did I actually spend on two round-trip tickets to Sydney? I paid out of pocket for the initial flights from Omaha to Los Angeles via Minneapolis. For two, one-way tickets in first class it cost me $607.20. Then Elizabeth and I both redeemed 110,000 Delta Skymiles and paid $28.10 in taxes for our Delta One tickets from Los Angeles to Sydney. The return trip from Sydney to Omaha via San Francisco and Phoenix was booked with 40,000 AAdvantage miles and $87.06 in taxes, per person. So my total out of pocket expense for this trip was $837.52! Have I ever mentioned that I LOVE MILES AND POINTS?!

It's a bummer I wasn't able book the whole trip in business/first class, but award space to Australia in December is almost non-existent. On the bright side, we were lucky enough to book one of the few dates Delta had available in their Delta One cabin, and we get to fly Qantas's 747 home from Sydney, even if it is in economy.

Well now that the hard part is out of the way, I have to decide what we're going to do when we get there. If anyone has been to Sydney or has any good suggestions, make sure to comment below or email me at passengerpoldberg@gmail.com. All of your help is greatly appreciated!
