Barcelona has been on my travel radar since Elizabeth and I visited our friend Rachel in Minneapolis this summer. We started tossing around the idea of taking a trip together sometime in 2017 and settled on Barcelona. Just a word of caution, if you start tossing around the idea of an international trip around me you better be ready to go because I'll make it happen. Just food for thought.
Since Elizabeth and I had an extra 45,000 AAdvantage miles laying around, my initial thought was to use those for our trip and capitalize on off-peak award rates. When I initially priced it out it was going to cost 45,000 AA miles and roughly $175 in taxes and fees for a round-trip ticket from Omaha (OMA) to Barcelona (BCN).
I emailed Rachel about signing up for the AAdvantage Platinum World Elite MasterCard so she could earn an easy 45,000 AAdvantage miles and then we'd all be good to go... or so I thought. All of a sudden Rachel texted me and told me she got denied for the card? I couldn't believe my eyes. I've never seen ANYONE denied for a rewards card with an interest rate of over 18%! It was time to go back to the drawing board.
Just out of curiosity I pulled up Google Flights on Tuesday, November 22nd to check out prices. As I scrolled through the calendar I came to a complete halt when I saw round-trip tickets were going for $400 in February! By the grace of God we were back in business. I immediately saved a Delta itinerary so I could book it when I got home from work. Sure enough, when I got home from work the prices on Delta had already shot back up to over $800, and once again I thought all hope was lost. I checked Google Flights one more time in a last ditch effort and to my surprise there were still a couple of dates left on United for $397 round-trip.
In the midst of all of my talking, cussing, and cheering to myself was my kind Mother. She'd sat patiently on the couch and listened to my roller coaster of emotions. After I announced the price I just found she decided she wanted to come too! I quickly make sure everyone had the money to book them and we locked in our tickets!
After the dust had settled and my calm demeanor was restored, we booked four round-trip tickets from Omaha/Minneapolis to Barcelona for $396.06 a piece!
Unfortunately if you didn't jump on these fares on Tuesday they've already gone back up. The same ticket we got for $397 is now pricing out at $1,212, which means we saved over $815! Man that's a steal.
Did anyone else take advantage of these cheap fares?
